This is a selected image from the coronal abduction external rotation (AER) sequence. Like the coronal sequence, images are perpendicular to the line of sight when viewing the supine patient from directly above, except that the arms are overhead.
The coronal AER sequence displays the posterior inferior rotation of the clavicles (C) with the subclavius muscles (SUB) and the posterior anterior medial rotation of the coracoid processes with attached muscles enhancing costoclavicular compression of the bicuspid valves within the draining veins of the neck, supraclavicular fossae with lymphatics, and compression of the subclavian arteries (SA) with binding nerve roots (neurovascular bundles). This sequence displayed greater compression on the left than on the right. The image below was selected to best display the left subclavian artery (SA) over the higher left first rib (not labeled) and the axillary artery (AX) as compared to the low right subclavian artery (SA) over the right first rib (FR).
A few labels have been placed on the image to assist with identification of landmark anatomy. The clavicles (C), subclavius muscles (SUB), subclavian arteries (SA), anterior scalene muscle (AS), first rib (FR), deltoid muscle (D), coracobrachialis muscle (COR), stenocleidomastoid muscles (STM), trachea (T), axillary arteries (AX), phrenic nerve (PR), right lung (RL), and left lung (LL) are labeled for reference. The aorta (A), pulmonary artery (P), and left atrium (LA) are labeled to identify the heart.
This additional image (anterior to the image above) displays the intermediate high signal intensity of decreased venous return (marked with X) within the left subclavian vein (SV), over the higher left first rib (FR), and axillary (AXV) veins as compared to the low signal intensity within the right subclavian vein (SV) over the right first rib (FR). This image displays enhanced costoclavicular compression of the biscupid valves within the subclavian veins (SV) between the clavicles (C) with the subclavius muscles (SUB) and the first ribs (FR), left greater than right (FASEB Journal Vol 19, No. 5, A489.3, March 24, 2005).
A few labels have been placed on the image to assist with identification of landmark anatomy. The trachea (T), anterior scalene muscles (AS), deltoid muscles (D), coracobrachialis muscles (COR), stenocleidomastoid muscles (STM), latissimus dorsi (LAT) muscles, clavicles (C), internal jugular veins (J), subclavian veins (SV), axillary veins (AXV), first ribs (FR), lymphatic drainage (LY), right lung (RL), left lung (LL), humerus (H), Liver (LIV), vein in the liver (V), and stomach (S) are labeled for reference. The aorta (A), pulmonary artery (P), superior vena cava (SVC), brachiocephalic vein (BRV), brachiocephalic artery (BR), and innominate (left brachiocephalic) vein (I) are labeled to identify the heart.
